Sound familiar?

Missing a tooth, or losing one?

  • A denture or partial that slips, clicks or needs adhesive every day.
  • A tooth another dentist said cannot be saved.
  • A bridge that keeps failing because the teeth holding it are weak.
  • An implant quote from a chain clinic that changed once you sat in the chair.
  • Worry that you are too old, or your bone is too thin, for an implant.

All of these are questions for a periodontist, and the answer starts with a CT scan you look at together.

Newport Beach patients drive about 25 minutes up Pacific Coast Highway to Goldenwest St for dental implants placed by a periodontist at Safari Dentistry and Implants. The Huntington Beach office plans front-tooth implants on a CT scan and an intraoral scan so the gum line and the crown match the neighboring teeth, and it does any gum or bone grafting needed for a natural result in-house.

How the implant process works at Safari

Getting a dental implant takes three to four visits over three to six months: a consultation with a CT scan, the surgery to place the post, a healing period, and the visit where the crown is attached. For Newport Beach patients every one of those visits happens at Goldenwest and Heil, because the periodontist who places the implant also restores it.

  1. Consultation and CT scan. The scan shows bone height and width, the nerve and the sinus. You look at it with the periodontist and get a written plan and fee.
  2. Bone grafting if needed. Thin bone is built up first, or at the same visit as the implant when the scan allows it. Sinus lifts for upper back teeth are done here too.
  3. Implant placement. About an hour for a single implant, under local anesthetic. Oral sedation is available. Most patients are back to normal in two days.
  4. Crown. After healing, an intraoral scan is taken and the ceramic crown is made and fitted.

Why a periodontist rather than a general dentist?

Periodontists train for three years after dental school in the gum and bone around teeth, which is exactly where an implant lives. The long-term failures of implants are almost all gum and bone problems, and a periodontist is the specialist who prevents and treats them. Having that specialist do the placement and the follow-up is the difference between an implant that lasts twenty years and one that needs rescuing.

Why Newport Beach patients choose Safari for implants

Newport Beach patients ask harder questions about front-tooth implants: whether the gum will recede and show metal, whether the crown will match, whether the bone will hold. Those are periodontal questions, and the periodontist answers them from the scan, grafts the gum or bone where needed, and places the implant with the crown in mind. The fee is written down at the consultation and does not change.

Cost, insurance and payment plans

You leave the first visit with the fee written down: implant, abutment, crown, any grafting, and the follow-up visits. That number does not change once you are in the chair. The front desk checks your PPO or HMO benefits first, tells Newport Beach patients on Medi-Cal Dental what the program will and will not pay for, and sets up monthly payments for the balance if you want them.

From the moment I walked in the door, Dr Safari and team welcomed me like family. Everybody was very nice. The office is cute and clean. They addressed all my cares and concerns. I had a very nice experience I highly recommended this place. And they have coffee in the waiting room.

I've have never been to a better dentistry in all my life! Dr Safari truly cares about her patients and I can't thank her enough for the work that she does. I hadn't been to the dentist in over 10 years thinking I can take care of my teeth pretty well on my own (bad, I know!) I had an immediate dental emergency randomly, and Dr Safari was there for me. To say the least, I actually had a lot of work that needed to be done that was avoided all those years, so my emergency was a blessing in disguise. She is so attentive, kind and an expert at what she does. Honestly Dr Safari and all her staff are such positive people. From Bridgett, Ada and to all the dental assistants. Every single staff member makes you feel they're there to help and so welcoming with their smiles. I'm so grateful for what she has done for me and I value her dedication to helping people. Seriously, thank you!

Questions patients ask

How long do dental implants last?

With healthy gums and regular cleanings, 20 years or more; many last a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacing after 10 to 15 years of wear. Gum disease around the implant is the usual cause of early failure, which is why a periodontist places and monitors them here.

Does getting an implant hurt?

The surgery is done under local anesthetic and most patients describe it as easier than the extraction. Oral sedation is available for nervous patients. Expect mild soreness for two or three days, managed with over-the-counter medication.

Is 70 too old for dental implants?

No. Age is not a limiting factor; bone volume and general health are. Many of the office's implant patients are in their 70s and 80s, often replacing a denture that no longer fits.

What if I do not have enough bone for an implant?

A bone graft rebuilds it, either before the implant or at the same visit, and a sinus lift does the same for upper back teeth. Both are done in this office by the periodontist. See the bone grafting and sinus lift page.

What are the alternatives to a dental implant?

A bridge, which uses the neighboring teeth as anchors, or a removable partial denture. Both cost less up front, but a bridge shortens the life of the anchor teeth and a partial does not stop bone loss. The periodontist explains all three with the CT scan.
