Sound familiar?

Missing a tooth, or losing one?

  • Worry that you are too old, or your bone is too thin, for an implant.
  • A gap you have been chewing around for months or years.
  • A denture or partial that slips, clicks or needs adhesive every day.
  • A tooth another dentist said cannot be saved.
  • A bridge that keeps failing because the teeth holding it are weak.

All of these are questions for a periodontist, and the answer starts with a CT scan you look at together.

Los Alamitos and Rossmoor patients drive 15 to 20 minutes to Safari Dentistry and Implants in Huntington Beach for dental implants placed by a periodontist. The office does the CT scan, bone grafting, implant surgery and final crown at Goldenwest and Heil, so the specialist referral your family dentist wrote does not mean bouncing between two offices across the county.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Most adults with a missing tooth are candidates for a dental implant, including patients in their 70s and 80s and patients who have worn dentures for years. What decides it is bone volume, gum health and general health, and all three are checked at the first visit with a CT scan and a periodontal exam. Thin bone is not a no; it usually means a graft first.

Things that can delay or change the plan: active gum disease (treated first), uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, certain osteoporosis medications, and recent radiation to the jaw. None of these is unusual and the periodontist sees them every week. Los Alamitos patients who were told elsewhere that they are not a candidate are welcome to bring the X-rays for a second opinion.

What replaces the tooth while the implant heals?

A temporary tooth is provided for front teeth so nobody sees a gap; back teeth usually heal without one. The healing period is three to six months, during which the bone fuses to the titanium post. For a full arch, temporary teeth are fixed to the implants the same day.

Why Los Alamitos patients choose Safari for implants

Los Alamitos patients typically arrive with a referral from a general dentist who does not place implants. Here the periodontist does the consultation, the surgery and the follow-up, and can also make the crown, so the whole implant stays in one office. Patients who prefer to have their own dentist fit the crown can do that too; the periodontist sends the records and coordinates the timing.

How much is a dental implant near Los Alamitos?

Implant fees in Orange County vary widely because some offices quote the post alone and add the abutment, crown and grafting later. Safari quotes the whole treatment in writing at the consultation. PPO plans usually contribute toward the crown, Medi-Cal Dental covers implants only in specific medical situations, and monthly payment plans are offered for anything not covered.

From the moment I walked in the door, Dr Safari and team welcomed me like family. Everybody was very nice. The office is cute and clean. They addressed all my cares and concerns. I had a very nice experience I highly recommended this place. And they have coffee in the waiting room.

I've have never been to a better dentistry in all my life! Dr Safari truly cares about her patients and I can't thank her enough for the work that she does. I hadn't been to the dentist in over 10 years thinking I can take care of my teeth pretty well on my own (bad, I know!) I had an immediate dental emergency randomly, and Dr Safari was there for me. To say the least, I actually had a lot of work that needed to be done that was avoided all those years, so my emergency was a blessing in disguise. She is so attentive, kind and an expert at what she does. Honestly Dr Safari and all her staff are such positive people. From Bridgett, Ada and to all the dental assistants. Every single staff member makes you feel they're there to help and so welcoming with their smiles. I'm so grateful for what she has done for me and I value her dedication to helping people. Seriously, thank you!

Good to know

Questions patients ask

What if I do not have enough bone for an implant?

A bone graft rebuilds it, either before the implant or at the same visit, and a sinus lift does the same for upper back teeth. Both are done in this office by the periodontist. See the bone grafting and sinus lift page.

What are the alternatives to a dental implant?

A bridge, which uses the neighboring teeth as anchors, or a removable partial denture. Both cost less up front, but a bridge shortens the life of the anchor teeth and a partial does not stop bone loss. The periodontist explains all three with the CT scan.

Can I get all my teeth pulled and get implants?

Yes. A full arch can be replaced with four to six implants and a fixed set of teeth, often with temporary teeth placed the same day. See the All-on-4 page.

How soon can I drive to Los Alamitos after implant surgery?

If you had local anesthetic only, you can drive yourself home the same day. If you chose oral sedation, someone needs to drive you; the drive to Los Alamitos is short enough that a family member can wait in the office.

How long do dental implants last?

With healthy gums and regular cleanings, 20 years or more; many last a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacing after 10 to 15 years of wear. Gum disease around the implant is the usual cause of early failure, which is why a periodontist places and monitors them here.
